In Focus Women In Profile - Ellen Kowallis

IN FOCUS WOMEN IN PROFILE - ELLEN KOWALLIS, UTAH, USA

What sparked your interest in photography?

To make this short and sweet, I went through a difficult family challenge and I felt I needed something to focus on that would bring me peace. As I began dabbling and learning more, photography became an extension of me, helping me to heal and express myself.

How long have you been shooting for?

Since January of 2019

What is your favorite type of photography?

I do landscape photography because it gives me a peaceful feeling when I’m in those outdoor places. Especially in contrast to our chaotic world. But my absolute favorite type is newborn photography.

What is in your camera bag?

I have a Canon EOS R, a 16-35 wide angle lens viii, a 24-105 lens, and I have a 100-400 lens. Included with this is a myriad of filters to fit each lens.

What would your dream kit be?

It would still be Canon, but probably an R6 with all new RF lenses.

What software do you use to process your images?

Photoshop and Lightroom.

Who are your top 3 photography inspirations?

One is Dustin Schoel, the next would be Benjamin Jaworskyj, and the third would definitely be Adam Gibbs. Although the photographer that makes me laugh the most is none other than Fototripper, Gavin Hardcastle.

What are your top bucket list locations you want to shoot?

The Oregon coastline and into Vancouver Island. Last year I had plans to visit Nova Scotia, but Covid has really put a damper on that. Also in Canada, Banff holds a special place on that list, too. And then I think the last couple of places on my list would be the Grand Canyon and Yosemite.

What advice would you give a beginner?

Try and shoot every day and get used to waking up early EARLY and staying out late to get those perfect golden hour shots.
